According to Anden, the Barrows were created as a burial site for some tribal leader many centuries before the events described in the story. Later druids used it as a sacred place to pray to their "Old Gods". Since then it was abandoned and inhabited only by wildlife. The Barrows run underneath the Great River and leads from the Wilderness to the city of Betancuria. It is used by the Princess during Lesson 7 to get back there after her trip with Frank Kelten
